NEIU Weekend rewind

An estimated 1,000 people participated in NEIU Weekend, which started with Fall Fest and ended with a triumphant Golden Gala. Here are a few of the highlights:

Northeastern honors Alice McGee with Distinguished Alumnus Award

Alice McGee may have the greatest internship story in Northeastern Illinois University history.

As a Speech major, McGee landed an internship with a new show called “A.M. Chicago” in the mid-1980s. The show’s host: Oprah Winfrey.

While the show’s name didn’t last, McGee did. She was hired as Winfrey’s first employee, rising from chief publicist to the role of senior supervising producer of “The Oprah Show.”

Goodwin Gift Challenge reaches second-year fundraising goal

Heading into Northeastern Illinois University’s annual Golden Gala Alumni Awards Dinner on Sept. 16, the NEIU Foundation had raised about $470,000 in contributions since the beginning of the year. By the time the gala ended with a flurry of pledges big and small, that total exceeded the $500,000 second-year goal of the Goodwin Gift Challenge—with more than three months to spare.

U.S. Department of Education awards Northeastern Illinois University $1.2 million McNair grant

The United States Department of Education has awarded Northeastern Illinois University a five-year, $1,161,325 Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achivement Program grant.
