Ensemble Español prepares for historic American Spanish Dance & Music Festival

Featuring three showings of its popular “Flamenco Passion” concerts, Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater will continue its 40th-year celebration with the 2016 American Spanish Dance & Music Festival from June 8-25. The annual event includes performances, classes, seminars and lectures showcasing the elegance and passion of Spain’s dance, music and culture.

Alumnus Dennis Kass earns prestigious Golden Apple Award

Dennis Kass, who completed his secondary teacher certification in history/social studies in the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education at Northeastern Illinois University in 2008, has been honored with a 2016 Golden Apple Award.

Now in its 17th year, Northeastern Illinois University’s Jewel Box Series returns for the 2016-17 season with a new lineup of stellar entertainment. The series brings renowned artists from around the world to perform in Northeastern’s acoustically superior Recital Hall and spacious Auditorium. 

NWCFS announces summer schedule of movie screenings

The Northwest Chicago Film Society (NWCFS) has announced its summer slate of movies that will be shown on Northeastern Illinois University’s Main Campus. “Bringing up Baby” (pictured above), a 1938 film starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, will open the summer series on May 31.

Earth Science Department receives USDA grant

Northeastern Illinois University’s Department of Earth Science has received a $200,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture.

‘We knew her when’

As Alaa Basatneh sat in the gallery for President Barack Obama’s final State of the Union Address—a mere 15 seats away from first lady Michelle Obama—she couldn’t stop thinking about the Supreme Court justices.

“It felt surreal. The energy in that room,” Basatneh said. “All of the lawmakers, the officials, the cabinet, the justices. I kept looking at the justices and thinking, I want to see expressions on their faces. They’re supposed to be neutral.”
