Social Work master’s program ready for launch

Victor Gaskins never attended Northeastern Illinois University, not even for a single class. Yet he’s one of the University’s biggest fans. “What can I say? I love Northeastern,” Gaskins said.

With good reason: Gaskins is a program administrator with St. Leonard’s Ministries, a Chicago social service provider that helps with residential, case management and employment services for men and women who have been released from prison and need help rebuilding their lives.

Noteworthy at Northeastern: Retirement of the president

At the end of a town hall event on July 6, Northeastern Illinois University President Sharon Hahs announced that she will retire at the end of September. “It has been my honor and joy to work with committed and talented faculty and staff, serving bright and hard-working students, helping them to meet their professional and personal goals,” she told the audience in the Auditorium and watching on the live video broadcast.

“Ever since I was little, the one thing I have always wanted to do—which I know is kind of odd—is that I’ve always wanted to go to college,” said Gomez, who naturally is a member of the University Honors Program. “I really value education. I think it’s so important for people to be educated—not necessarily just to get a job but just to better yourself.”
